Have you seen the new Liba watering can from Ferm Living? The watering can comes in several colors, is beautiful, easy to use and holds up to 5 liters of water, so you can water many plants at once. But, Liba also has an interesting production history - it is made from 100% recycled "post-consumer" plastic!

With Liba, function and responsible design meet. Liba is designed with sustainability in mind, both when it comes to function and material. The watering can is produced in Denmark from plastic packaging from consumers. A specific granulate called HDPE is used, which stands for High Density Poly Ethylene. HDPE is one of the most versatile types of plastic, and is used for a number of other purposes, such as plastic bottles for soap and detergent, among other things.

Plastic packaging from consumers is sorted and cleaned, before it is broken down and processed into HDPE granules. When the granules arrive at the production area, a specific dye is added to give the watering can the desired color: either black, olive green or cashmere. Depending on the color to be created, 1-3% dye is added to get the right shades. As the granules are made from packaging waste, there will always be the possibility of small, subtle color and surface variations - which simply makes the product even more unique.

The granulate is then heated to a porous mass, which is poured into Liba molds and blow molded into the correct shape. The air spreads the material evenly through the mold, creating the cavity where the water is held. The watering can is then released from the mold, before a skilled craftsman is given the job of cutting away the excess material by hand. This process requires precision and a steady hand, as this must be done while the watering can is still warm. It is this process that gives the watering can its soft, organic expression.

All excess material is added to the next round, so that production is kept circular and no material is wasted!
